Our Story
Rare Vintage was founded in 2018 out of a simple observation: the Australian fine wine market was dominated by retailers selling from their own stock, not by brokers working in the client's interest. The wines that serious collectors actually wanted — ex-château Burgundy, grower Champagne, private-cellar Bordeaux — were largely inaccessible through conventional channels.
We built Rare Vintage to change that. Our model is straightforward: a client tells us what they want, we find it in Europe, inspect it, and ship it directly to Australia. We take a margin, the client gets the wine. No warehousing, no stock risk, no conflict of interest.
Over time, the business has grown to encompass three additional services: bonded storage for wines arriving from Europe, consignment sales for clients who wish to sell, and an Available Now catalogue of wines we hold in our own Australian bonded cellar. Each service exists because a client asked for something we didn't yet offer.
Rare Vintage remains owner-managed. Every sourcing decision, every inspection report, every communication reflects our own judgement about quality and provenance. That will not change as the business grows.
Brokerage
The broker model
Most wine companies sell from stock they own. Their commercial interest is to sell you what they have, at the price they need. We operate differently.
Impartial advice.
We have no financial incentive to recommend one producer over another. We recommend what we believe is the best wine for your requirement.
Access.
Because we source from private European networks rather than wholesale channels, we can find wines that simply do not appear in Australia.
Trust
Provenance guarantee
Every wine we source is inspected and documented before it leaves Europe. We do not ship wine we would not buy ourselves.
Original packaging
OWC, OCC, or château-branded carton verified and photographed at source.
Wine level
Fill level assessed and recorded for every bottle. Results documented in the provenance report.
Colour
Colour assessed for age-appropriateness and any signs of poor storage.
Label condition
Front, back, and neck labels examined. Condition grade assigned and photographed.
Capsule integrity
Capsule examined for damage, lifting, or signs of interference.
Storage history verified
We require documentation of storage history and chain of custody for all Sourced to Order wines.
